Basics about Video Types

When you are creating a video whether you are using a digital camera, a video phone or a camcorder you need to decide on where the video will eventually end up. There are a wide variety of video types and you have to determine where you want your video to be shown. If you want to create a DVD, depending on your editing software you can use a video with .avi, .mpeg. or .wmv extensions and the software will convert it to DVD format before it burns the video onto a dvd. Each of these types have their advantages and disadvantages. For instance, .avi is a Audio Video Interweave file is a format from Microsoft. It can be played using Windows Media Player or Quicktime. The files have a tendency to be fairly large the more minutes of video you have. Whereas the MPEG is video format standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG); compressed using MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 compression; often used for creating movies that are distributed over the Internet. And finally the WMV is Video file based on the Microsoft Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container format and compressed with Windows Media compression. You have to be careful when saving your movie to wmv as it might not be convertible to other more popular movie types.

Now Facebook does all the converting for you and according to their help sections:

Now if you want do add a video to your own site your best bet is to get a flash video converter such as Free Video to Flash Program offered by : http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/index.htm I use this program to convert my Family Reunion Video to flash. It gives you the code to place in your webpage all you have to do is upload the video to your website into a folder and paste the code into the page or post. You may have to edit where the video is held. The best thing is to create a folder called video or a folder for each video that you upload. For instance, I named a folder FamilyReunionVideo2006 and uploaded the required files into that folder and edited the html code to reflect that change.

Video Making Software

There are at least 2 possibly 3 software packages that you will need to have on your computer in order for your home video to make it to either DVD or online. There is software that is required to take your video from your camcorder (or whatever device you used to take the video) and edit it. Then there is the software to convert it from the final edited version to either a DVD or video you can upload online. Each of these require different types of things to happen to your movie in order for others to enjoy it.

First, you will need software to edit the movie and software to convert you movie to either a dvd, viewable on computer or to be uploaded to the internet. Some products may do everything in one go and others are just pieces of the puzzle. If you have a DIGITAL camera or camcorder you can upload the raw footage directly to your computer with the copy and paste function. If you camcorder is tape-based then you will have to either pay someone to put it on a disk for you OR you will need to use one of those DVD recorders and burn your raw movie onto a DVD. You will need to know what format your movie is in as well. Knowing the difference between a “.mov” file or a “.mpeg” or even a “.avi” is crucial when looking at the types of software that can handle these specific files.
